School Garden - follow the kids as they grow!

Vigilance Required

This week, garden duty was all about vigilance.  What’s eating our tomatoes?  What smashed our pumpkin?  What burrowed beneath our squash?

All good questions, and thankfully, we have Upper Elementary on the lookout.  Many of our tomatoes are beginning to turn red and we want nothing to jeopardize their progress.  Ruh-roh.  Too late.  Moms–close your eyes.  The ick factor will scare you…

Ugh.  Well, I did warn you.  Not a pretty sight.  Heartbreaking, really.  Well, until one Lower Elementary boy decided to “pluck and chuck” it was.  I see no need to elaborate.

On to prettier subjects, our sweet, sugar snap peas are thriving.  They adore the cooler weather and are sprouting up in droves.  One thing about sugar snaps, they can grow to be quite substantial in weight for their spindly vines, which means they’ll need support.  No worries.  With our kidney beans long since harvested, we’ll re-use their support posts and provide our precious peas with all the support they need.

Gee.  They sure do look happy. 🙂

That, they do.  All in all, the garden is growing well.  We focused on important Terms to Know in the garden this week and will continue our studies.   I mean, now that we’ve tilled and toiled, tested our wits and loosened and greased our elbows, we’ll be ready for a BIG spring garden.  Can’t wait!
