School Garden - follow the kids as they grow!

Now We’re Talking Icky Eaters

Plants.  Plants are icky eaters.  They eat stuff like worm and chicken poop, cow manure, fish emulsion, blood and bone meal and seaweed.  Yuck.

But those are the organic sources for the important nutrients like N-P-K (nitrogen-phosphorous-potassium) that plants need, so that’s what we give them.

So that’s what the kids did this week.  Using their hand rakes, they tilled the soil around the base of the plant, sprinkled (with gloves) the worm poop around the plant and worked it into the top layer of dirt until you couldn’t distinguish between dirt and poop.  Perfect!

And that’s just how easy it is to feed your plants.  Now someone should get over to corn bed.  These babies aren’t looking too fertile.  Not sure what happened here, maybe bad seed? Planted too deep?  Not sure.  But we won’t dwell on it.  We’ll work something else into this bed, something that enjoys the cooler temps (that we hope to see, sometime in the near future–hopefully the VERY near future!)
