Kids gardening is a natural. The two go together like worms and dirt. It’s a healthy relationship and one that must be encouraged. Why, my kids were thrilled to be invited to help in the garden! They prefer to harvest, or worm check, but they will weed, so long as it’s not too hot and the weeds look manageable. Of course, there can’t be anything more exciting going on at the moment to distract them, like Dad rolling by on his tractor, or when the dog shows up looking for a playmate.
But once you gain their full attention, the reward is definitely worth it. The memories you create are, too. Actually, they’re priceless. In fact, gardening with my children and their classmates at school inspired my Wild Tales & Garden Thrills series of chapter books about organic gardening. Share the adventure with a child!

I’m planting pole beans around a teepee. It adds vertical interest and is fun for kids. I let my daughter have a little watering can to help me, and I let her help me harvest too when practical.
