So I’m officially jealous of the Eustis High School hot pepper plant. I grow lots of peppers–hot, sweet and Hungarian–and my plants have NEVER grown larger than 18″ in height. Ever.
Imagine my surprise when I visited the high school this week to discover this enormous pepper plant! I stopped. Blinked. And double-checked the fruit on the plant. This thing is a monster bush ranging 5 ft. high and 5 ft. wide. “Is this a pepper plant?” I asked.
“Yes,” came the simple reply. “Take some, if you’d like.”
Gardeners are a generous sort of people and I would have obliged, had my stunned surprise not overcome my every thought. Wow. Just wow. Of course, my first instinct was to photograph the anomaly and document the existence of this plant to share with my blog readers. Perhaps someone else has had the same experience?
If you have, please DO share! Apparently, the secret to this plant’s success is mushroom compost, half sun/half shade throughout the day and generally leave it alone. They didn’t feed it or fuss over it. Nothing. In fact, the teacher in charge claimed they were terrible farmers. Not true.
These were their tomatoes from last season. Beautiful. And they grew wild and glorious and tripled in size! Must be the mushroom compost–the same compost I’m going to dump all around my pepper plants at home!
