Garden skinny - my personal scoop on gardening

Gift Ideas for the Gardener in Your Life

With the gift-giving season solidly upon us, you might be wondering what makes the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. As a gardener, I can understand your dilemma, so I’ve compiled a selection of gift ideas. You can find them in my Gardening Gifts section of the website. From garden bags to garden gloves, luxuriant lotion to sharp-edged tools, you’re bound to find something a gardener will love!

sunscreen for gardeners

This year I’m including one of my favorite sunscreens by SkinCeuticals. With a SPF 50, Physical Fusion UV Defense is a delicate lotion and my absolute go-to for a facial sunscreen. Once I hit 30 years of age, I’ve avoided sun on my face at all costs. Growing up in Florida is tough on a girl’s skin and mine is proof-positive. Hats are a great protection and a must-have in the garden, but when you’re hard at work digging, tilling, weeding, and watering, invariably the sun sneak a peek beneath the brim your hat. But no worries! This lightweight lotion has got you covered. It’s great for boat rides when hats refuse to stay put.

weeder and cultivator gift idea

Another new item is this weeding tool from CobraHead. This mini version actually behaves like a “bionic” finger in the garden. I don’t know about you, but when I’m weeding, I find I’m using my gloved fingers to dig and pull as I weed, to brush and smooth as I transplant. With this tool, my fingers get a break because the steel blade does all the work. And not only will my fingertips be spared, so will my gloves. I wear holes clear through the fingertips at an alarming rate! This cultivator is called the “Steel Fingernail” for a reason. If you need to reach into small spaces and remove weeds from around the base of your plants, you need this tool. I find it serves double-duty as a soil aerator, too. You can poke and work the soil around your plants without disturbing them, encouraging better nutrient absorption.

compost bucket kitchen gift

And while you’re in the giving spirit, why not take a look at kitchen counter compost bins? From ceramic to steel, bamboo to recycled plastic, these buckets make it super easy to collect kitchen scraps for the compost pile. Mine allowed me to ditch the open collection system of a plastic container in my kitchen sink for an attractive countertop “bucket.” You can find a slew of choices over at Hayneedle.

compost bin

Want to splurge? Consider an outdoor compost bin from Busch Systems. Fully self-contained, this allows gardeners to create beautiful compost for the garden without an unsightly outdoor pile. Wunderbar! Busch Systems has a ton of other recycling products, too, so if you’re in the market, check them out.

But know whatever gift you choose, your gardener will be grateful.
