In Florida, the fall garden is filled with “cool season” plants. Think brassicas and roots. We’re talking broccoli, Brussels, cabbage, kale, collards, cauliflower, carrots, beets, onions, garlic, to name a few.
These plants do not like temperatures in the 80’s and above, so now is the perfect time to get them in the ground. They’ll thrive until May. As you see, I plant lots of broccoli, because my family will eat it and it freezes well.
Plus, you can make delicious appetizers like these Broccoli Tots. Yum! Asian-Inspired Cabbage Slaw, anyone? Delicious and healthy.
Sweet onions will go in your fall garden, but you’d better put your patience cap on. These gorgeous roots take six months to mature. But once they do, you’ll be amazed how sweet your reward.
Lettuce also loves the fall garden, and makes a great companion for all plants, so tuck them in between your other plants and they’ll shade the soil and suppress the weeds. I do love a multi-tasker!
