Sustainability and eating local is becoming all the rage, and I for one, am thrilled. Not only is this movement about consuming fresh ingredients in season for peak nutritional value, it’s also about sustainability.
With the debate about the safety of consuming GMO foods in full swing, I for one prefer to keep it simple. I grow my own vegetables, because I want to consume them as fresh as possible…can’t get any fresher than garden snacking! I want to know what is inside them…toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. I like the sense of independence I gain…no trips to the market necessary. I feel at one with the natural cycle of our planet…sustainability is gardening as Mother Nature intended. And spending time among the lush beds of green? It’s like a form of meditation for me.
So it goes without saying that I was thrilled to discover a new farm in my neighborhood opening up to the public. Woo hoo! Sound the cow bells, I’m arriving early and getting my pick of the crops!
The Dirty Dog Organics Farm is all about plugging into the local food movement and teaching their kids about the value of sustainability, knowing where your food comes from and how to make it all happen. Something way too many young people don’t know how to do.
As a parent, I feel it’s my job to teach my kids these basic tenets. As a consumer, I’m excited to see others doing the same. And as a consumer, I love the idea of neighborhood grocery shelves vs. commercial grocery shelves. I teach kids that sustainability is all about NOT needing to go to the grocery store, but visiting your local farm is different. Totally different!
The selection is gorgeous AND fresh, including homemade pies, breads, honey and a variety of condiments. This is my dream pantry. As if their beautiful vegetables weren’t enough, they sell herbs and even locally grown coffee. How cool is that?
Today was the grand opening of the Dirty Dog Organics Farm located in Leesburg, Florida, and they are a prime example of what’s right with the localvore movement. If you live anywhere nearby, you must check out the Dirty Dog Organics Facebook page for more details. Better yet, head over for a visit and enjoy the abundance of nature for yourself!
And of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t include a photo of their namesake. What a sweet boy.
