Today is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and with everyone home, it’s the perfect time to start that home garden you’ve always wanted. Not only will you have fresh produce at your fingertips, you’ll be helping the planet. And home gardening is easy. Remember: plants grow all by themselves in nature. You’re just along for the adventure!
Raised bed gardening is a great place to begin. It minimizes weed problems and nematode and grub trouble–so long as you place a liner in the base before adding soil. (So easy, even a kid can do it!)
In your raised bed, you can grow everything! Short beds work best for your greens and fruits. Deeper beds are a must for potatoes and carrots. If you can’t have a raised bed, don’t let that stop you. Plants will grow in lots of containers. They’ll even grow upside down like this tomato plant in a “topsy turvy” container.
My next adventure in gardening will include hydroponics. Currently I garden in ground, but as I get older and my help (translated: children) moves farther from home, I need to condense my grow habit. Bring on the towers–just look at how much they can produce!
However you choose to garden, do. Just do it. You’ll be healthier, happier, and a proud member of the “local” movement. Think of the gas fumes you’ll be eliminating! Besides, during these pandemic times, having your own food source has become more necessary than ever. Stay safe and stay healthy this Earth Day.
