The millennials have it right. Not only do they want to build their experience portfolio, work for a purpose before paycheck, but they are opting for the latest and greatest trend in home buying.
The Agrihood
Meet the Agrihood ~ Master-planned housing communities with working farms as their focus. Think ample green space, barns, and outdoor community kitchens. Some boast greenhouses and food forests, while others incorporate farm-to-table restaurants. Homes are built for the new generation, including solar panels, energy-efficient lighting and recycled building materials. A bonus? Most include some form of CSA, or community supported agriculture where residents share in the bounty (without pulling the weeds!).
Environmentally-friendly Millennials
But millennials aren’t the only ones jumping onto the bandwagon. According to the Urban Land Institute, there are over 150 agrihoods across the country with many more in the development stage, with some minutes away from bustling cities like Atlanta, Phoenix, and Fort Collins, Colorado. You can find a list of communities here, but go ahead and do your own research. There’s sure to be popping up where you live! The photo above is from Serenbe, a community located about 30 minutes southwest of Atlanta, GA–a dream neighborhood, if you ask me. From the farm to the community, this place is idyllic.
Neighborhood Farming
Another beautiful agrihood community can be found in Virginia, called Willowsford where they encourage you to get up close and personal with nature. Count me in! Fresh air, clean living and tons of green space, that’s what I want. Okay, a professional chef whipping up master creations from the neighborhood produce just plucked from the ground that morning is HUGE plus. A cool community within walking distance, a tangle of nature trails to lose myself and I think I’ve found my retirement home!
Take a look for yourself and let me know what you think. Are you ready to move-in and set your roots? (funny!)
